Use masking tape to block off any parts you don’t want to paint. This ensures a clean and precise look. If the box has engravings, don’t worry—we’ll address them next!

Step 2: Remove Logos and Engravings

To eliminate logos or engraved text, lightly sand the affected areas with fine-grit sandpaper. This will smooth the surface and make it easier to apply paint. Be gentle to avoid damaging the box’s structure.

Once sanded, wipe away any dust with a clean cloth. Now your optical box is ready for a complete makeover!

Step 3: Base Coat and Coloring

Choose a base color for your optical box. Acrylic paints are ideal because they adhere well to plastic and metal and dry quickly for a permanent finish.

• Use a flat brush to apply the base coat evenly.
• Allow the paint to dry for 10-15 minutes before applying additional layers. This prevents streaks and ensures a solid color.

Note:

Acrylic paint dries darker than it appears when wet. Keep this in mind while mixing and selecting colors.

Step 6: Let It Dry and Finish

After painting, let your box dry completely. This step is crucial to ensure your hard work stays intact. Once dry, you can apply a varnish to seal and protect the paint. This gives the box a polished, professional finish and increases its durability.

Be careful before applying varnish; ensure the box is completely dry. Use permanent colors that won’t smudge or mix, preserving your design perfectly.

For this project, I used mousse plastique, the kind often found wrapped around fruits to protect them. It’s a great material to work with because of its light and flexible texture, but be careful—it’s fragile and requires patience.

Along with the mousse plastique, you’ll need a pair of sharp scissors, some glue, a small branch (I love using natural materials like branches to give the flower a realistic touch), green crepe paper for the leaves, and flower tape to finish the piece. All of these materials are easy to find and often already available in your home.

2. Preparing the Mousse Plastique

To start, I chose white and yellow mousse plastique for my Kadam flower. First, I separated the yarn-like structure of the mousse by hand. You can also use scissors to cut it into finer strands, but I find hand separation allows for a more natural texture.

Next, I cut the white mousse pieces a bit longer than the yellow ones, which will give the flower a realistic gradient from its yellow center to the white outer layer. Each piece needs to be small but long enough to form a pompom later on.

3. Creating the Pom-Pom Flower Head

Once I had the pieces ready, I took some yarn and tightly tied the mousse strands together in the middle. This forms the foundation of the Kadam flower’s spherical shape. After tying, I fluffed out the mousse pieces to create a rounded, pompom-like shape.

Tip: Use scissors to trim the edges evenly, ensuring a smooth, round flower head. I recommend doing this step carefully because it helps the pompom resemble the dense, globe-shaped clusters of a real Kadam flower.

4. Attaching the Flower to a Branch

For the stem, I love using natural materials, so I collected a small branch from a tree. The rough, natural texture of the branch contrasts beautifully with the softness of the pompom flower.

I applied glue to the base of the pompom and pressed it firmly onto the branch. Be sure to hold it in place for a minute or two, allowing the glue to set. If you find the pompom isn’t sticking well, you can also wrap a bit of yarn around the base for extra support.

5. Making and Adding the Leaves

Next, I used green crepe paper to make the leaves. Cut the paper into leaf shapes, making sure the size is proportional to the flower and branch. Crepe paper has a flexible texture, so you can give the leaves a slight curve to mimic real leaves.

I glued the leaves along the branch, arranging them in a natural pattern. To secure them better, I used a little bit of thread to fix the leaves more securely. After that, I wrapped flower tape around the branch to cover the thread, giving the branch a polished and cohesive look.

The flower tape not only helps hide imperfections but also provides a more finished look, making your Kadam flower appear more lifelike. Once the tape is in place, take a moment to adjust the shape of the flower head and leaves.

And that’s it! You’ve created a beautiful, handmade Kadam flower using recycled materials. It’s a simple yet delicate project that brings joy not only because of the process but because of the memories it evokes.

The Kadam flower holds a special place in Bangladeshi culture, particularly during the rainy season when it blooms in abundance. It’s known for its fragrant, globe-shaped flowers that are often used in perfumes.

With its bright orange flowers clustered in dense, ball-shaped heads, the Kadam tree can grow up to 45 meters (148 feet) tall. It’s not just admired for its beauty but also plays a role in the ecosystems of South and Southeast Asia. The tree is also celebrated in Indian religion and mythology, making it a symbol of joy and vitality.

Why This Project Brings Me Joy

As a child, I used to make Kadam flowers for fun, and recreating them now as an adult brings back fond memories. This project made me happy not only because I was able to recycle materials but because it connected me with my past.

2. Secure with Thread: As you glue each petal, you can also use thread to tightly wrap around the base of the petals. This ensures they stay in place and don’t shift as you continue building the rose. If you’re using hot glue, work quickly to attach the petals before the glue dries.

1. Cut the Leaves: Using the green crepe paper, cut out leaf shapes. You can make them as large or as small as you prefer. For a realistic touch, I like to use three pieces of metal wire, which I insert into the leaves to give them structure.

The Moon Boat: A Symbol of Chittagong’s Naval Heritage

Among the myriad types of boats that have graced our rivers and seas, the Moon Boat holds a special place in my heart, especially because of its origin from my native city, Chittagong. The Moon Boat, with its elegant crescent shape, is more than just a fishing vessel; it is a reflection of the rhythm of life by the Bay of Bengal. These boats, crafted to navigate the challenging waves of the deep sea and the journeys to the islands, embody the resilience and ingenuity of the local fishermen. The beauty of their design, functional yet artistic, has inspired me to explore this motif in my artwork across various mediums—drawing, painting, lino printing, watercolour and more.

Yves Marre and His Unforgettable Contribution

My fascination with boats took a profound turn when I first read about Yves Marre and his extraordinary work in Bangladesh in a newspaper at the age of ten. The story of how he sailed a river barge from France to Bangladesh, later transforming it into the floating Friendship Hospital, left a lasting impression on me. It was an act of generosity and innovation that spoke to the very spirit of my country—a place where water, though a source of life, can also be a source of hardship.

In 2017, as a student of Alliance Française, I had the incredible fortune of meeting Yves Marre in person. I read a passage at his book launch, a moment that connected my childhood admiration to my adult aspirations. Yves Marre is not just a philanthropist; he is a kind soul whose work in preserving Bangladesh’s naval heritage and providing healthcare to the most remote river communities is nothing short of inspiring. Our continued friendship is a treasure to me, and his influence is a guiding light in my own artistic journey.

Preserving the Moon Boat: A Heritage at Risk

The Moon Boat, as Yves Marre himself has said, is one of the most outstanding and typical boats of the Bay of Bengal. However, like many traditional crafts, the art of building these boats is at risk of fading away. In 2013, through the collaborative efforts of Watever, TaraTari Shipyard, and the Zeppelin photo agency, a project was initiated to preserve the knowledge and techniques of Moon Boat construction. Five skilled carpenters from Cox’s Bazar were brought to the TaraTari shipyard, where their craftsmanship was meticulously documented. This preservation effort ensures that future generations can continue to build these beautiful vessels, keeping the tradition alive.

Since 2014, the Moon Boat has been showcased in France as part of efforts to highlight the rich naval heritage of Bangladesh. This international recognition of our traditional boats is not just a nod to their unique design but also an acknowledgment of the cultural significance they hold.

Yves Marre said about moon boat, “This boat, whose beauty is matched only by its rarity, is one of the most outstanding and the typical of the Bay of Bengal”.

Boats in My Art: An Ongoing Exploration

In my artwork, the Moon Boat is more than just a subject; it is a symbol of connection to my homeland, to the rivers that crisscross it, and to the people who have lived by and from the water for centuries. My representations of the Moon Boat in various artistic forms are an homage to this heritage, a way to keep the stories of our rivers and boats alive in a world that is rapidly changing.

Choosing Dresden: A Well-Considered Decision

Choosing a destination wasn’t easy. With so many possibilities, I had to weigh the advantages of each city. My main goal was to improve my language skills and broaden my knowledge in a different environment. Dresden, with its rich heritage in art history and literature, emerged as the ideal choice. The city is a gem of Romanticism and Expressionism, two movements that particularly fascinate me.

Preparations and Challenges: A Path Full of Obstacles

The idea of going to Germany was exciting but also stressful. Fortunately, my German professor in France guided me and encouraged me to apply to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HFBK). Thanks to his support and the acquisition of a scholarship, I was able to overcome financial obstacles and embark on this adventure. Without this help, it would have been impossible to cover the costs of living and studying in a new country.

Life in Dresden: A Blend of Cultures and Discoveries

From the moment I arrived in Dresden, I knew I had made the right choice. This city, located on the banks of the Elbe, is a true cultural melting pot. Living in an Erasmus student residence allowed me to meet students from all over the world. Together, we shared our cultures, cooked traditional dishes, and learned from each other. We organized small parties for Christmas and New Year’s, a gingerbread house decoration contest, an artistic program, and a secret Santa gift exchange. These moments of exchange and discovery enriched my experience far beyond the classroom.

The Daily Life of an Erasmus Student

The university system in Dresden was different from what I was used to. At first, I was a bit nervous, but the warm welcome from my professors and classmates quickly eased my worries. One of the most memorable experiences was a dinner prepared by our professor after the first official meeting. This kind of closeness and exchange was new to me and greatly contributed to my integration.

Pandemic-related restrictions limited our ability to visit museums, but our art history professor adapted by introducing us to private collections and the architectural treasures of Dresden. The academy offered a creative environment with numerous workshops. I explored various fields, from drawing to engraving and photography.

The Challenges of an Adventure Abroad

While this experience was enriching, it wasn’t without its difficulties. I faced issues such as my French SIM card being blocked, banking transfer problems, and even the lockdown that restricted our movements. Being in a foreign city with limited knowledge of the local language was sometimes disconcerting. But these challenges are an integral part of the Erasmus experience and helped me grow.

An Unforgettable Experience

Participating in an exchange program like Erasmus is a unique adventure that goes far beyond academic learning. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and provided me with precious memories and friendships. Even though everything wasn’t perfect, each difficulty encountered was part of a larger journey that enriched me personally and professionally.

Ultimately, my stay in Dresden was a transformative experience. It allowed me to discover a new culture, improve my artistic skills, and build lasting relationships. The Festival of Games 2024 was an unforgettable experience. As a volunteer, I had the honor of contributing to the success of this spectacular event, which brought together players of all ages in a festive and friendly atmosphere. From 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM, Prairies Saint-Martin transformed into a true gaming paradise, attracting children, teenagers, adults, and families with various activities and games.

Games for All Ages and Interests

This free event offered a variety of gaming areas carefully designed to cater to everyone’s tastes and interests. There was a space dedicated to early childhood, board games, video games, tournaments, giant games, role-playing games, miniature games, collectible card games (CCGs), construction games, and many more. Each corner was filled with laughter, smiles, and moments of pure joy shared among friends and families.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Festival of Games was the emphasis on local handmade creations. I had the opportunity to discover the remarkable work of Dame-Yna, a talented creator whose jewelry and “Dice Potions” particularly caught my attention. Her potions, designed for role-playing game (RPG) players, are unique and aesthetic objects, blending creativity and utility.

The Magic of Dice Potions

Dame-Yna‘s concept is simple yet ingenious: magical potions with a die inside, designed to captivate the imagination of RPG players. Each potion is unique, created with a special solution that allows the die to float to the surface, stable colorants like Chinese ink, and brilliance effects added by mica. The glass vials, sealed with aluminum caps, are airtight and carefully decorated, offering a touch of elegance and mystery.

The dice themselves vary: D4, D6, D8, D12, D20, or even D100. Dame-Yna also created decision dice, a six-sided die with two “yes” faces, two “no” faces, and two “?” faces to answer questions like a magic 8-ball. Each vial is customizable, from the choice of wax color and seal to the label name. It’s a meticulous process that takes about two and a half days to ensure the airtightness and quality of each potion.

Unique and Personalised Creations

In addition to the potions, Dame-Yna offers jewelry inspired by fantasy and the steampunk universe, incorporating miniature or standard-sized dice that she creates herself. Necklaces, earrings, hair clips, brooches, and eyeglass chains are all crafted with varied materials, including stainless and surgical steel. Some jewellery pieces, created from broken items, are unique works of art.

An Enriching and Inspiring Day

Participating in this event brought me a lot of joy and satisfaction. I discovered a multitude of different games, admired magnificent handmade creations, and saw people with big smiles. It was an unforgettable day that enriched me, taught me new games, and allowed me to share joyful moments with the participants.

Otherwise, you can easily order a prepared tote bag and colored fabric online. Here are some essential steps and tips for creating stunning hand-painted tote bags:

Tote bags (blank canvas or cotton): High quality canvas bags providing a durable surface for painting.

Fabric paints or acrylic paints with fabric medium: For your tote bag project, fabric paints are highly recommended. • Start with the Background Colors. Clean your brush thoroughly every time you change colors to avoid unwanted blending.

7. Wait for Drying

Before adding any additional details or decorations, allow the paint to dry completely. Drying time may vary depending on the paint used, so be patient.

To ensure the durability of your design, it is crucial to set the paint:

Iron the bag: Once the painting is finished and the bag is completely dry, iron the reverse side of the fabric behind the painting to set the colors before washing it. Use an iron set to the appropriate temperature for the fabric and place a piece of cloth or parchment paper between the iron and the painting to avoid any damage.

On December 16, 2020, a tragic event in Bangladesh profoundly impacted my artistic work: the rape and murder of a young woman during the Victory Day celebrations. This day, meant to symbolize freedom and victory, reveals the cruel irony of the condition of women in our society. If even on this festive day, women are not safe, what meaning does our victory hold? The brutality of sexual assaults and murders of women is omnipresent in the media, but rarely followed by justice. Too often, the victims are blamed for their own misfortunes because of their clothing or appearance.

Jewellery: Beauty and Stigma

Women love to wear jewelry to feel beautiful and express themselves. However, in many cultures, they are forced to give up these ornaments due to sexual harassment. Some people mistakenly think that women adorn themselves to attract men, forgetting that beauty and elegance can be acts of self-care and personal expression.

It is important to understand that not all women present themselves attractively to attract men. Even if some do it for a specific man, it doesn’t mean they are trying to attract all men. In public spaces like buses or markets, men do not hesitate to touch women’s private parts, which traumatizes many of them, pushing them to avoid going out. Many women are forced to veil themselves and wear burqas from a young age. Some families believe that marrying off girls early can prevent such incidents.

In the Indian subcontinent, jewellery also has economic significance for women. During weddings, they receive gold or silver jewellery, symbols of financial security for those who do not earn money.

The reinterpretation of jewellery by Art

Faced with these injustices, I designed a collection of jewelry made from screws, pins, nails, cans, and ceramics. These raw and sharp materials disrupt the traditional idea of jewelry as a mere beauty accessory, transforming it into a tool of defense. These pieces are not just pretty; they are armor. Through my artistic work, I suggest that jewellery should not only be ornaments but also instruments of protection, providing both mental and physical security to women.

In my imagination, it is not the woman who protects her jewellery, but she wears jewellery to protect herself, to defend herself. No one touches her without her consent. No woman should have to stop doing what she loves; she should be able to wear the dress she wants. No one should force her to do something she doesn’t like or to marry before she is physically and mentally prepared.

Artistic Inspiration

My work is inspired by Christelle Familiari‘s sculpture, “La Panoplie de Défense,” and the contemporary jewellery of Karl Fritsch. At the FRAC Franche-Comté, I visited an exhibition where Familiari’s “La Panoplie de Défense, épaule droite,” made of cotton thread, synthetic beads, and porcelain spikes, particularly struck me with its blend of fragility and defensive form. These artists have inspired me to imagine a new form of jewellery, where the woman does not protect her jewellery, but protects herself with them.

Choosing Freedom: Your Right, Your Responsibility

Through “Safeguarding Jewellery,” I aim for every woman to freely choose what she wants to wear, without fear or judgment. I am not against religious clothing, but against the coercion and stigmatization of women for their clothing choices. No one should be forced to give up what they like, nor should they be accused for their appearance. My art is a call to defend and protect women, to allow them to express themselves freely, and to punish the true perpetrators of violence and injustice.

On December 16, 2020, a tragic event in Bangladesh profoundly impacted my artistic work: the rape and murder of a young woman during the Victory Day celebrations. This day, meant to symbolize freedom and victory, reveals the cruel irony of the condition of women in our society. If even on this festive day, women are not safe, what meaning does our victory hold? The brutality of sexual assaults and murders of women is omnipresent in the media, but rarely followed by justice. Too often, the victims are blamed for their own misfortunes because of their clothing or appearance.

Jewellery: Beauty and Stigma

Women love to wear jewelry to feel beautiful and express themselves. However, in many cultures, they are forced to give up these ornaments due to sexual harassment. Some people mistakenly think that women adorn themselves to attract men, forgetting that beauty and elegance can be acts of self-care and personal expression.

It is important to understand that not all women present themselves attractively to attract men. Even if some do it for a specific man, it doesn’t mean they are trying to attract all men. In public spaces like buses or markets, men do not hesitate to touch women’s private parts, which traumatizes many of them, pushing them to avoid going out. Many women are forced to veil themselves and wear burqas from a young age. Some families believe that marrying off girls early can prevent such incidents.

In the Indian subcontinent, jewellery also has economic significance for women. During weddings, they receive gold or silver jewellery, symbols of financial security for those who do not earn money.

The reinterpretation of jewellery by Art

Faced with these injustices, I designed a collection of jewelry made from screws, pins, nails, cans, and ceramics. These raw and sharp materials disrupt the traditional idea of jewelry as a mere beauty accessory, transforming it into a tool of defense. These pieces are not just pretty; they are armor. Through my artistic work, I suggest that jewellery should not only be ornaments but also instruments of protection, providing both mental and physical security to women.

In my imagination, it is not the woman who protects her jewellery, but she wears jewellery to protect herself, to defend herself. No one touches her without her consent. No woman should have to stop doing what she loves; she should be able to wear the dress she wants. No one should force her to do something she doesn’t like or to marry before she is physically and mentally prepared.

Artistic Inspiration

My work is inspired by Christelle Familiari‘s sculpture, “La Panoplie de Défense,” and the contemporary jewellery of Karl Fritsch. At the FRAC Franche-Comté, I visited an exhibition where Familiari’s “La Panoplie de Défense, épaule droite,” made of cotton thread, synthetic beads, and porcelain spikes, particularly struck me with its blend of fragility and defensive form. These artists have inspired me to imagine a new form of jewellery, where the woman does not protect her jewellery, but protects herself with them.

Choosing Freedom: Your Right, Your Responsibility

Through “Safeguarding Jewellery,” I aim for every woman to freely choose what she wants to wear, without fear or judgment. I am not against religious clothing, but against the coercion and stigmatization of women for their clothing choices. No one should be forced to give up what they like, nor should they be accused for their appearance. My art is a call to defend and protect women, to allow them to express themselves freely, and to punish the true perpetrators of violence and injustice.

Part of the fun lies in visiting the craft store to choose your paint colors. If you enjoy sewing, you can use cotton fabric of any color and size. Otherwise, you can easily order a prepared tote bag and colored fabric online. Here are some essential steps and tips for creating stunning hand-painted tote bags:

Tote bags (blank canvas or cotton): High quality canvas bags providing a durable surface for painting.

Fabric paints or acrylic paints with fabric medium: For your tote bag project, fabric paints are highly recommended. • Use the Right Paint: Use fabric paint so it doesn’t bleed in the wash. If you are using other types of paint, like spray or acrylic, make sure they are compatible with the fabric or add a fabric medium to make them suitable.
• Use the Right Brushes: Take several brushes of different sizes. Use large brushes for large areas and small brushes for details. Watercolor brushes or acrylic brushes are recommended.
• Start with the Background Colors. Clean your brush thoroughly every time you change colors to avoid unwanted blending.

7. Wait for Drying

Before adding any additional details or decorations, allow the paint to dry completely. Drying time may vary depending on the paint used, so be patient.

8. Fix the Paint

To ensure the durability of your design, it is crucial to set the paint:

Iron the bag: Once the painting is finished and the bag is completely dry, iron the reverse side of the fabric behind the painting to set the colors before washing it. Use an iron set to the appropriate temperature for the fabric and place a piece of cloth or parchment paper between the iron and the painting to avoid any damage.
